[særə'təʊgə], amtlich Saratoga Springs [-sprɪȖz], Stadt im Bundesstaat New York, USA, in den südlichen Vorbergen der Adirondacks, 25 000 Einwohner; Heilbad mit Mineralquellen, die schon von den Indianern zu Heilzwecken genutzt wurden.
 
Im amerikanischen Unabhängigkeitskrieg besiegten die Amerikaner unter General Horatio Gates (* 1728, ✝ 1806) am 7. 10. 1777 bei Saratoga die britischen Truppen unter General J. Burgoyne, der am 17. 10. 1777 kapitulierte. Der Sieg von Saratoga trug wesentlich zur Anerkennung und offenen militärischen Unterstützung der USA durch Frankreich bei und leitete damit die Wende im Unabhängigkeitskrieg ein.
